When I was 10, I marked the year with fear.
A child lost in the dark cellars of dread,
Uncertain, afraid that the monsters near,
Suddenly spring and surprise him in bed.
In those ten bonny and sturdy seasons,
The sapling prest unto the Motherland’s
Powerful and benign bosom reasons
With wisdom of the ancients in his hands
Grown callused from Father Time’s expeditions
In a world sweet from earned victory
Bitter from unrealized fruitions.
I write in this new chapter my story:
I am 20, and I mark this blessed age
With honor, with patience, and with courage!
