Soul Food

Bread kept grows mold
Milk kept turns sour
Hasn’t anyone told
That kept things go bad by the hour?

Fizzy drinks become stale
Meat gives off the smells of putrefaction
Even processed foods fail
If it is kept for long in a closet partition.

They vary in the means and ways
By which they turn foul,
Such is the fate of the heart in passing days
The sullen keep within their soul.
